Irony In The Story “The Eighty-Yard Run” Essay

Mr. Christian Darling, a well-respected high school athlete and handsome man, had an interesting – rather ironic – change in his life from the beginning of the story to the end. In The Eighty-Yard Run, a story by Irwin Shaw, the focus is on Mr. Christian Darling and his high school sweetheart, Louise. In high school, they were always together, and Louise always bought Christian Darling many nice gifts. As time passed and high school ended, Christian and Louise got married and moved to New York City. In New York City, both of them worked for Louise’s dad as managers of a New York office. They were very wealthy and happy. However, this did not last very long, with Louise’s father killing himself when the profits turned into debts. After this, Christian started doing nothing, sitting at home day after day drinking himself to death, complaining about how horrible life was. On the other hand, Louise got a job with a woman’s fashion magazine where she quickly rose through the ranks. She became very sophisticated, and she and her husband quickly became two very different people. Christian started being the one always trying to please Louise – as opposed to before where she tried to please him – and eventually gave up. As fate would have it, Christian Darling ended up working for. Rosenberg. This is ironic because Mr. Rosenberg wants Christian to tour colleges as a tour representative because of his â€Å"broad shoulders and well-kept waist †¦his carefully brushed hair and his honest, wrinkleless face.† as well as the fact that he was favorably known. This is ironic because his life was nothing like his appearance. He wasn’t a loyal boyfriend, and ended up becoming a boozed-out loser. Not the type of person a company wants to portray as the ideal college student. This is ironic because although his outer appearance is nice, his actual life has not been that way at all. From him not being loyal to his wife to his wife being bored with him and ignoring him, he has not had an ideal life. The last ironic bit here is that the football player who he envied so much got his neck broken playing professional football.

The unforeseen danger of the participants were not averted and the injuries suffered by the young girl is the fault of Alton Haunted House. Alton Haunted House believes the young girls harm was the result of her own negligence. It was not the duty of the young girl to research beforehand the possible dangers of the haunted house. Analysis In our analysis of the case team D recognized that there were flaws in the defendant’s case. The defendants had a responsibility, a duty in fact, to ensure the safety of the patrons. There should be a limit as to how far actors should be allowed to come to patrons. Also nowhere in the case did it state that a sign was posted stating enter at your own risk or anything of that nature. So team D concluded that the defendant must be held liable for their action because there were no clear policies in place for employees with regards to chasing patrons. . Based on the issue, rule, and analysis conducted, the team’s conclusion is that Alton Haunted House is liable for negligence because they breached their duty of care. This breach resulted in foreseeable injuries to the plaintiff. In this case, patrons did assume a level of risk by entering into the house; however, Alton Haunted House still had a responsibility to ensure their employees were properly trained and supervised prior to interacting with patrons in order to minimize the risk of injury. This case provides an excellent example of the liabilities business owners may encounter. Comparative Study of Methods of Fetal Weight Estimation INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of fetal weight in utero is important for the obstetrician to decide whether or not to deliver the fetus and also to decide the mode of delivery. Both low birth weight and excessive fetal weight at delivery are associated with increased risk of newborn complications during labor and the puerperium. Various clinical formulae like Johnson’s formula and Dawn’s formula have come into usage for fetal weight estimation. Another formula is the product of symphysiofundal height with abdominal girth in centimeters which gives a fairly good estimate of fetal weight. METHODS: It is a prospective observational study of 200 women at term pregnancy at a hospital.  Patients within 15 days from their Expected Date of Delivery were included in the study. The formulas used in this study are: JOHNSON’S FORMULA SYMPHYSIOFUNDAL HEIGHT X ABDOMINAL GIRTH (AG X SFH) DAWN’S FORMULA HADLOCK’S FORMULA USING ULTRASOUND. RESUTLS: There have been differing results about accuracy of various methods of estimating fetal weight. This study showed that AG X SFH was the best indicator among all other methods assessed followed by Hadlock’s formula by ultrasonographic method. CONCLUSION: Fundal height assessment is an inexpensive method for screening for fetal growth restriction. SFH measurement continues to be used in many countries on large scale because of its low cost, ease of use, and need for little training as the setup for ultrasonographic evaluation is not readily available in rural setups. The perinatal complications associated with low birth weight are attributable to preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), or both. For excessively large fetuses, the potential complications associated with delivery include shoulder dystocia, brachial plexus injuries, bony injuries, and intrapartum asphyxia. The maternal risks associated with the delivery of an excessively large fetus include birth canal and pelvic floor injuries and postpartum hemorrhage. The occurrence of cephalopelvic disproportion is more prevalent with increasing fetal size and contributes to both an increased rate of operative vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery for macrosomic fetuses compared with fetuses of normal weight. Estimation of fetal weight being done clinically has received much criticism for less accuracy due to observer variation. Various clinical formulae like Johnson’s formula and Dawn’s formula have come into usage for fetal weight estimation. Another formula is the product of symphysiofundal height with abdominal girth in centimeters which gives a fairly good estimate of fetal weight. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess the fetal weight in term pregnancies by various methods- abdominal girth (cms) X symphysiofundal height (cms) AG X SFH, Johnson’s formula, Dawn’s formula and Hadlock’s formula using ultrasound, and to compare the methods after knowing the actual weight of the baby after birth. MATERIALS AND METHODS It is a prospective observational study of 200 women at term pregnancy at Dhiraj General Hospital, Vadodara from 1st June 2010 to 31st May 2011. Patients within 15 days from their Expected Date of Delivery were included in the study. Cases of MULTIPLE PREGNANCIES, OLIGO/POLYHYDRAMNIOS, MALPRESENTATIONS AND FIBROID OR ADNEXAL MASSES were excluded THE METHODS JOHNSON’S FORMULA SYMPHYSIOFUNDAL HEIGHT X ABDOMINAL GIRTH. DAWN’S FORMULA HADLOCK’S FORMULA USING ULTRASOUND. JOHNSON’S FORMULA: WEIGHT IN GRAMS = (SYMPHYSIOFUNDAL HEIGHT – x) X 155. Here symphysiofundal height is taken after correcting the dextrorotation, from the upper border of symphysis to the height of the fundus. station of the head was noted: x = 12 when head was at or above the level of the ischial spines x = 11 when head was below the level of ischial spines. AG X SFH: Weight in grams = abdominal girth (AG) x symphysiofundal height (SFH) (AG X SFH) Abdominal girth was measured at the level of umbilicus and symphysiofundal height as described earlier. DAWN’S FORMULA: WEIGHT IN GRAMS = Longitudinal diameter of the uterus x (transverse diameter of the uterus)2 x 1.44 2 HADLOCK’S FORMULA: After head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length were measured in centimeters, the sonography machine calculated the fetal weight. Fetal weight estimated by the above four methods was compared with the actual weight of the baby after birth. A comparative analysis of the four methods was done. Average error in > 3500 gms group was least with Johnson’s formula. AG X SFH and Dawn’s formula had a tendency to underestimate. The other 2 methods overestimated. In > 3500 gms group, all methods underestimated. As compared to only 50% and 63.5% by Dawn’s and Johnson’s formula, respectively. TABLE VI: STANDARD DEVIATION OF PREDICTION ERROR The standard deviation of prediction error was least with Hadlock’s formula, closely followed by AG X SFH. It is much higher with Dawn’s and Johnson’s formulae. The variance between the four methods was statistically different. p value DISCUSSION Birth weight is a key variable affecting fetal and neonatal morbidity, particu- larly in preterm and small-for-dates babies. In addition, it is of value in the management of breech presentations, diabetes mellitus, trial of labour, macrosomic fetuses and multiple births. Clinicians’ estimates of birth weight in term pregnancy were as accurate as routine ultrasound estimation in the week before delivery. Furthermore, parous women’s estimates of birth weight were more accurate than either clinical or ultrasound estimation. There have been differing results about the accuracy of the various methods of estimating fetal weight. This study showed that AG X SFH was the best indicator among all of the other methods assessed followed by Hadlock’s formula by ultrasonographic method. Other studies have reported limited accuracy of ultrasound EFW at term, particularly in macrosomic fetuses but over all accuracy of this formula is same for all infants. Equipped with information about the fetal weight the obstetrician managing labour is able to pursue sound obstetric management, reducing perinatal morbidity and mortality. Symphysiofundal height is one of the important clinical parameters taken for fetal weight estimation by AG X SFH, Johnson’s formula, Dawn’s formula. According to my study, Hadlock’s ultrasonographic method was the most accurate for estimating fetal weight. Of the three clinical methods, AG X SFH has better predictable results than the other 2 methods. AG X SFH, a clinical formula can be of great value in a developing country like ours where ultrasound is not available at many health care delivery centres. It is easy and simple, can be used even by midwives. With less errors AG X SFH is easier to apply by paramedical workers for the evaluation of fetal weight even in the rural setup as like our area of this study. By this study the results are suggesting that Hadlock’s formula has least standard deviation but it requires ultrasonographic evaluation. So after it, AG X SFH is the second most formula for estimation of featl weight which is clinically applicable and most reliable method in the absence of sonologic setup. CONCLUSION Fundal height assessment is an inexpensive method for screening for fetal growth restriction.1 Clinicians are biased in their fundal height measurements by knowledge of gestational age and use of a marked measuring tape. This tendency increases with higher patient BMI and with less provider experience.2 While we have yet to establish reliable tests to predict which pregnancies are at risk of developing IUGR, surveillance of fetal growth in the third trimester of pregnancy continues to be the mainstay for the assessment of fetal well-being. Such surveillance is done by regular fundal height assessment, ultrasound biometry or a combination of both methods.3 Relative growth of the SF height seems to be independent of fetal sex, maternal obesity and parity.4 There is disagreement in SFH measurement between observers regarding the ability to separate small fundal heights from those that are not small (Bailey 1989). This becomes an issue especially in a clinical setting where the pregnant woman sees more than one clinician during the course of her pregnancy. Belbin (2004) has identified nine important team roles and assigned individuals to these roles based on established personality theories. Each of these roles can be separated into three areas; action orientated roles, people orientated roles and task orientated roles. It is crucial to consider which areas people within the current organisation fall into when looking to form teams within the new organisation. Due to the current management approach employed within LOCOG the majority of employees will fall between action and people orientated roles. Having identified the roles necessary for a successful team to function it is also important to consider the various stages that will take place after the formation to the team. According to Tuckman there are five stages of group development that team performance goes through over a period of time; Forming (where the team members get together and the team is initiated), Storming (where the team members ideas and perspectives compete with each other), Norming (where group harmony increases), Performing (where the group starts working well with each other) and Adjourning (where the task is completed and the team is dispersed). Two factors the new organisation will need to focus on are the resolution of interpersonal relationships and of task activities to ensure the cohesiveness and high performance of the teams through the various stages mentioned. 2.2 Importance of a Structured HR planning process The implementation of a new structured HR Planning process in order to revise the role of marketing is a very significant change in culture for both the public and private sector. It will and can only work to the greatest effect if all marketing and promotional activity in the Island is either under direct control or can, to a great extent, be influenced by the new organisation. Currently the HR budget is allocated top down, with HR being allocated an overall financial sum by policy functions based on overall affordability, influenced to a degree by historical spend. However, the recommendation going forward would be to have a bottom up planning and control approach once overarching objectives have been agreed with policy colleagues. Whilst a top down approach based on profit or effectiveness would be desirable for rewording system, the complexities of proving the contribution of marketing to road casualty reduction is challenging A bottom up approach would reflect marketing industry standard and enable the whole team to be involved in the budgeting process. It would also encourage efficiencies and value for money with less pressure to spend the allocated budget without the risk that this would have implications on the following years allocation. Agreeing a longer term strategy would be beneficial to gain greater stability and certainty of marketing budgets over a period of several years. With a focus on reducing overall communication spend across Whitehall competitive parity will be more evident than in previous years. There are some influences on the effectiveness of this plan that we are unable to control, these should be identified and included within the risk analysis. Due to the significance and implications of decisions made by the Department, it is culturally very risk averse. This risk adverse culture must therefore be reflected in the planning and implementation of this programme of work. 4. Exit from the Organisation 4.1 Exit Procedures Employee Redundant However, where this occurs, such an employee should be considered to have voluntarily terminated his contract rather than transferring it and he would not, therefore, have title to any redundancy terms provided by the LOCOG after the event. Where, however, there are no equivalent roles for a LOCOG employee in the new public private partnership or where there are significant differences between the role that an employee currently undertakes and other roles that remain vacant within the newly created public private partnership, it would be inappropriate for the LOCOG to require that person to transfer. In these circumstances, the States should offer alternative suitable employment for those employees within the public sector or agree mutually acceptable redundancy terms. Clearly, it would not be fair and responsible to force employees into roles for which they are not suited, nor would it be sensible to place the success of the new public private partnership in jeopardy if such people were placed into roles for which they did not possess the relevant knowledge, skills and experience. An additional safeguard that will be provided to any employee who has transferred to the new public private partnership and which has been provided to other employees in similar circumstances is that these people will be circulated with all vacancies that arise within the public sector and would be able to apply for any such vacancies for a period of a year following their transfer. If they were to make a job application then they would be treated by the LOCOG as if they were a States employee, which would mean that they would have to undertake any of the recruitment processes that are applied on such occasions to internal applicants.

Consistency and Epistemic Probability ABSTRACT: Is consistency always epistemically virtuous? In this paper, I examine one threat to the traditional view that consistency is a minimum requirement for rational belief. Central to the argument is the notion of epistemic probability, understood as the degree of support or confirmation provided by the total available evidence. My strategy in examining this argument is to apply analogous reasoning to carefully tailored examples. The conclusions which emerge are substantive, informative and utterly implausible. I conclude, first, that the argument for inconsistency fails and, second, that it fails because epistemic probability does not conform to the axioms of the probability calculus. A plausible alternate model for determining degree of support is briefly considered. Is consistency always epistemically virtuous? Is it possible for a set of rational beliefs to be inconsistent? The traditional view has been that logical consistency is a minimum requirement for rational belief. Recently, this traditional view has been challenged, and is now in some disrepute. The issue is not only of interest in its own right, but also has bearing on several other aspects of our conception of justified belief. In particular, it is a critical issue for the coherence theories of justification which have been so prominent of late, for coherence is normally understood in such a way as to presuppose logical consistency. (1) Three distinct lines of argument against consistency can be discerned in the current discussion (although not always clearly distinguished there): (i) the paradox of the lottery, (ii) the fallibility argument, the core of which is an inference from my fallibility in the past to ... ...e Probable and the Provable (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1977), 37. (7) Note that throughout this paper, an assumption has been made which is necessary for the epistemic probability argument, as well as the analogous arguments, namely, that there is a degree of confirmation less than 1 which is sufficient for justified belief. If this assumption were not granted, then, of course, no conclusion concerning warranted belief would follow. But the same arguments would show that, in the cases presented, there is strong confirmation that there is a natural therapy which cures AIDS (or that someone has exhibited psychic powers). And this conclusion is itself quite absurd. It can be avoided, however, only by rejecting the fit between degree of confirmation and the calculus.
